Electric vision continued...

As you have read from the post below I have been given a brief called electric vision.
I have taken all my final images but I was stuck on what I should do with them in order to take them further.
Then one day last week , I think it was Wednesday ? , I was with Kate in our baseroom listening and looking at the work of one of her past students from last year.
And it clicked ! After thinking for days what I should do , it came to me.
I looked at the colours on the top Becky was wearing. All colours are on a spectrum , starting at black and ending atr white , or vice versa depending how you say it, and I thought to myself , "wouldn't it look good if my pictures were on the spectrum?!".
That is what I decided to do.
I started off by looking at the colour spectrum, now if I had unlimited funds/time I could of eventually created a series of photographs with each shade of each colour on the spectrum. However , I decided to stick to the basic colours and do variations.
Above is an image of the colour spectrum.
I used this as a basis when looking at my photographs.
I decided that I would add filters/colours to the pictures in photoshop. I then saved the pictures at various stages so that it ended up looking like a spectrum.
I decided to do this to my photographs to manipulate them. I like looking at photography as something that you can keep pushing. In the case of my current project that just because the picture is a different colour does not make it any less professional/a good photograph. I believe if anything it would add interest to the set instead of looking at a set of photos which I have just taken and done nothing with. However this is the first time that I haven't physically changed the pictures myself . I am usually stitching on to my photographs to create new images and to link it to dress making, (if you are interested in seeing some images that I have created and then sewn on to please look at my other blog http://www.jessicagraceworkjournal.blogspot.com/ )

Here is the original picture that I have no picked as the basis or my final piece.

And below are the images I have created for my spectrum.

Above are just a sample of my photographs. There are 15 in total which are all different shades of colours.
All I have to think now is about how I will arrange them , and this will be added to in a new post.

Electric Vision

For my latest project in photography we have been given the brief title "Electric Vision".

My first idea was to use a piece of clothing which really stood out , which was an electric colour. I was going to make an outfit but I found a top which I thought was perfect for this project.
I decided to take the sleeves of the top and use the sleeves for a different purpose.

The top reminded me of a piece of work by Piet Mondrian.
This picture reminds me of my top which I have adapted. After looking at this image , I decided to add to the orginal so it starts to look more like the top I am going to use.
The image above is the same image by Mondrian , however , I have changed the colours and added more colours to make it look more like the fabric of my top.
My idea behind this for electric vision are the colours of the top. They are electric colours and are very bright against backgrounds.
For the pictures I want to take ,I want to create an environment where the shirt is the main focal point . This means a basic background but bright lighting.

I decided to use my first model Becky to do this shoot. I decided to use her because she suited the top. I decided that the way she looks goes with what I was aiming for.

This is one of the first images I took of Becky , I decided that it is a very basic photograph and there is not a lot of interest to it , so I decided to put her in to different poses. Like the image below.
This image has more interest to it than the previous one. The different pose really makes the model stand out against the blackground and she is also showing the top of well.Tilting her head the way she has made the light shine on her face and highlighted it well.
As time through the shoot went on , I photographed her in many different poses. Another favourite of mine is the image below.
This is my favourite image out of all the ones I took of her. I believe the lighting looks very good on both her top and her face. I like how the lighting on her face has been blocked by her features and this in my opinion adds interest.

I think this project is currently going quite well. I am in the process of thinking up more ideas to go along side these photographs. I think as a basis for my project it is a good idea. The concept behind it is good and I am happy with the progress.
However , if I were to improve the pictures above along with the others I have taken I would contemplate creating different outfits from found sources. I would possibly incorporate lights in to the clothing to make the electric vision title more apparant.
I would possibly pick different types of outfits to fit with different decades so that the pictures are all different but do have a something in common.

Follow the yellow brick road...

Over the past few weeks I have been working on a project of my own choice. Over Christmas I was given the inspiration to create pieces of work which are based on one of my much loved films. The Wizard of Oz.
I decided to look at Dorothy's dress, and began thinking up ideas which would renew this very famous dress.
I started off by using a pattern for a skirt which I used to create an underskirt aswell.
Once I sewed my dress together , I decided that it looked pretty much the same to the original and so decided that I needed to change it.
In the end , I gathered the panals of my dress together, this created more shape and also let me fit a netted skirt underneith it, for the netted skirt I used heavy duty net and created layers of netting at the bottom of the underskirt to give it more volume.
Once I had created the skirt I needed to look at creating a top. The top I decided to create using just my mannequin. I made panals to create a bodice and stitched some of the left over checked fabric to make an edge. But it needed something extra which would add interest to the plain baby blue lining of the top.
And after visiting the Whitworth Gallery ( Thanks Kate ! ) I found my inspiration. At the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester , a group were in, creating different items with fabric , which I created something I later found out to be called a Suffolk Puff.
A Suffolk Puff is basically a circle of fabric hemmed and then gathered together with a button sewn through the middle to keep it in place.
I really enjoyed making them and I decided that they would add a subtle change to my top , I decided that I didnt want to keep the buttons all the same , I liked the fact that all the buttons were different and if someone was up close looking at it I think they would find it asthetically please as I did.
Finally after creating my outfit I used my friend as a model in the photography studio at my college. My friend Becky has some of the best tattoos I have ever seen , and it was pointed out to me by another friend that her tattoos would make a great contrast to the conventional dress I have made, and so when I photographed her I made sure that her tattoos were on show and that they stood out against the dress and vice versa.
The image above is one of my favourite photographs of Becky , I love her contrasting tattoos with the dress and the effect I have added on to the photo. All of these photos were orginally taken on my film SLR and then imported on to the computer to create digital images. I added these effects to make it look like the black and white scenes in the wizard of Oz.

Inspired by the link to a picture of Dorothy .
Overall, I'm really happy with the outfit , I think that as a first attempt it is quite well done and look forward to creating more pieces.
